When my husband and I were first married, we’d take time on Saturday mornings to have coffee and spend time catching up and sharing. It was a time to slow down, share how our week had been, and connect. As our family grew and the kids came along, they would join in on the conversation, sharing their thoughts, experiences, and how they were pursuing their goals.
As our kids grew older and went away to college or moved away, they would come home for a visit, and we knew that their first morning back, we’d have morning coffee and conversation. We’d share what was new in our lives, about books we’d been reading, and updates on pursuing our goals. I remember one of these mornings, my younger daughter had slept in. She woke up and worriedly asked, “Did I miss morning conversation?” (She hadn’t.) We treasured these rewarding discussions.
One day I read an article by a priest who thought of his morning prayer as “coffee with Jesus.” He’d light a candle, pour himself a cup of coffee, and spend time with Jesus. I decided to do the same, and begin every morning with coffee and prayer time with the Lord. I share about my life – my thoughts, experiences, and my hopes as well as my disappointments. I ask for His wisdom and grace.
A few years ago I started a small women’s group, a few friends meeting at a local coffee shop every month to have a Bible study. We share our ideas and how God has been working in our lives. We’ve grown close, encouraging and praying for each other.
One day I decided to share with them: there had been something on my heart for years, but I hadn’t had the courage to take the first step. I wanted to start a blog. They were excited for me, said they’d be my first readers, and asked me what I was going to call it. I hadn’t thought of a name yet; I had a couple ideas but they didn’t feel quite right.
As we were choosing a day for our next meeting and putting it in our calendars, I asked one of my friends how she entered our meetings on her calendar. Our group didn’t have an official name. I always wrote, “Women’s Group.” My friend replied, “Oh, I always write, ‘Coffee with Angel.’”
And I knew I had the name for my blog. I look forward to creating a space here to share my thoughts, experiences, and how I’m pursuing my goals. I invite you to join me in this journey; I invite you to stop by and enjoy “Coffee with Angel!”
